In the following Englsih sentence, which is correct usage? ("the" is needed before support or not?)

A. There had been calls for better education for women in Japan, but support had slowly slipped away.

B. There had been calls for better education for women in Japan, but the support had slowly slipped away.

  1. To be honest, as an English speaker for my whole life, both seem perfectly adequate. I guess "the" isn't necessary, but they both work, I think. That's odd.


  2. A is correct. 'The' should not be used with uncountable nouns used in a general sense. 'Support' is not countable and is used in a general sense in this sentence.

    'Support' would be a countable noun in the sense of a physical support such as a prop.

  3. B runs alot more smoothly.

    Answer me this... If there is more than one support that is offered usea but if it is only ONE support that slipped away use b.
