Question:

Which is correct: "than I" or "than me"?

Personally, I think the second one, because if it were changed to the 3rd person pronoun, you would say "than him/her", not "than he/she", wouldn't you?

I think if you use "I/you/she/he/they" as first person, then you'll have to add to it, like "than I do" or "than I am".

Example:

She's better in math than I am; or

She's better in math than me

Thanks.

  1. than me

  2. The first one's not correct. It's "She's better than me".

  3. "She is better in math than I" is correct

  4. In formal, standard grammar of English, the so-called "correct" form is "than I am" or "than I", but colloquially, people say "than me", and, they will not be sent to the h**l for that Cardinal Sin!

  5. "than I" is correct.

The verb following it ("am", in this case) is assumed.  It's the same general idea as an imperative sentence (if I say "Walk the dog", the "you" at the beginning of the sentence is assumed).

One way to recognize or understand it is to realize that the verb ("to be" in this case) is already in the sentence.  In your example... "she IS better in math than I".  "Is" & "am" are two different conjugations of the "to be" verb, so adding "am" at the end of the sentence is repetitive and not necessary.

  6. for papers, essays, school related stuff ' than i'

for convos id usually say 'than me'

  7. It IS "than I" or "than I am":

He is taller than I am

She is smarter than I am

...but unfortunately I don't remember why that is the case. It's been a while since I was in school taking English; I just remember the "how" and not the "why" sorry!
