I guess it depends on your surfing habits an what type of viruses you expect to have.  In some cases it's one.  In other cases, it's another.  Both are excellent programs, but on CNET reviews Avast has an edge.  I the case of your question all those are so close, you really are trying to split hairs. You should be good either way. If possible, you should also consider Trend Micro, the paid version and Nod32.  Also outstanding. For free, I like Avast and for paid, I like Nod32-just because I never tried Nod32.  I have Avast. Both Avast and Nod32 are rated the same and are the highest rated by CNet at download.com

Currently, Karpersky is the best for paid anti-virus.

The detection rate is number one and I am not surprise.

Karpersky is a Russian company and many hackers in Russia work for Russian mafia to create viruses to steal credit card numbers.

In China May 2007, Symantec/Norton anti-virus mistaken 2 Windows system files as virus and delete them. This cause millions of chinese to get BSOD when they boot up.

Avast use to be the best in Free edition ( better than AVG )

However, today I discovered that Threat Fire is even better because it use very little system resources (memory) to do the job of Avast.

I strongly recommend Threat fire because it use very little system resources (5 MB RAM).
