Which is easier, taking a Motorcycle Safety Course, or taking the Cycle Skills Test?

I am 19 so I don't need to take the Safety Course, but if I do i can waive the skills test. I'm a college student so I don't have a lot of time to do these tests. So which route would work best for me??

  1. I have heard that if you take the riding test at the DMV, if you mess up, you fail.  At least for the MSF, there is a passing grade.  I also think the course is of additional value because they teach you situational events and help to prepare you for them.  Take the course, please.

    Good luck.

  2. take the time and the money, and do the msf course, it may save your life and is really easy, they give you the bikes that are easy to handle for the tests.

  3. I think it is best to take the MSF safety course.  It will give you key riding skills to teach you how to handle many riding situations.  It's a valuable class for new riders as well as some seasoned riders.

  4. take the course - you'll be glad you did. the knowledge and skills the coaches give you is invaluable, plus when/if you pass you a) don't have to take the dmv riding test b) depending on your insurance agency may be eligable for a discount b/c of taking the course c) taking the course is pretty much the equivalent of riding on your own for 2 years.

  5. In Texas, the safety course costs around $190 and takes 15 hours of your time (over 2/3 days).  The skills test is a lot shorter and cheaper but I would recommend as a new rider to do the safety course as you will get more familiar with your bike and how to ride it.  The bikes/helmets are provided for the safety courses (in TX anyway).

Make sure you have a good knowledge of the riders handbook for your written test.
