I want to breed egg layers, and I want to know which would be easier, gourami's or betta's?? Don't tell me other fish to breed, I just want to know about gouramis and Betta's! Also tell me about breeding them. I would like to know experiences and what I should do and what you would feed the fry! Thanks!

  1. I think Betta Fish are way easier to breed. I breed Betta's. It is easy to tell when they are ready to mate. To get them ready put them in with each other for like 5-10 minutes. After that put half of a Styrofoam cup in with the male. Overnight he should make a bubble nest in the Styrofoam cup, if not just wait until he does. When he is done with the bubble nest he is ready. Put them back together again but only for a couple minutes. Separate them again. Wait for the female to look a little plump or get vertical stripes and she is ready.

When they are both ready to mate put them in the tank with the bubble nest and make sure there is nothing at the bottom of the tank. Try to keep the tank as clean as possible. It could take them a couple hours to mate so don't bother sitting there and waiting. After they mate take out the female and leave the male until the fry hatch. Feed the fry baby brine shrimp or micro worms.

Best of luck to you!  :-)

  2. Bettas are harder!

  3. I'm not an expert but I'd guess that Gouramis are easier because they aren't so aggressive toward one another.  Betas are difficult because the male will try to kill the female if he isn't 'in the mood'.  Plus Gouramis are cuter.

  4. I have experience breeding both and i think Bettas are easier, make sure you research it first though.

You can only s*x a goldfish during breeding season. The females are usually plumper and the males get white spots on thier gills.

  5. I've had experience with breeding Betta's and trust that you need to keep an eye on the female at ALL TIMES.

At one point when you breed them the boy wraps himself around the female and helps her squeeze the eggs out but you have to take her out immediately after it's all done or he will kill her.

Also he sometimes injures her while helping squeeze them out. It's a pretty crazy process and if you breed them you HAVE to watch her like a hawk.

  6. Gouramis are more even-tempered than Bettas. Bettas are fierce little fish that will try to kill eachother before, during and after mating. The babies will also try to kill eachother once they hatch. Only really experienced people should try to breed Bettas.
