I have owned a 78 kawasaki kz650 before, and rode it a few times. It was okay. I have never ridden a scooter of any kind. I know that the Silverwings are automatic, but weight, size, and aerodynamics are more of a concern. I'm 5'2", 130 lbs. female, and am asking because I would like to get a maxi scooter, but I am contemplating handling. Test driving at a dealer wouldn't be my first choice, because if I can't handle it well, I may lay it down.

  1. Have you taken the MSF course yet? It doesn't sound to me like you have enough experience to even make a sound decision. The big scooters are cool in the way that a fannie pack is cool or a minivan is cool. Wait? Take a vote! Who actually thinks those things are cool?

They are totally lame, but extremely practical.

That KZ650 is a classic sportbike from before sportbikes were covered in plastic. If you are thinking about a new bike, I would look at a 250 Ninja or something. It's half the price of a new Silverwing and it is NOT a scooter!

For the price of a new Silverwing, you could pretty much get anything from a used Superglide or a new Sportster, to an almost new 600 class sportbike.

I would save the big scooter for when you move to Florida and retire.

    Just my opinion though.

Big scooters are for people who are afraid of getting a motorcycle, and people who value practicality over all else.

I'm sure someone will disagree though.

  2. The silver wing is easy to ride, handles well and will keep up with traffic just fine. But at 5" 2" the seat height may be too much for you. Go to a dealer and set on one and see if you can put both feet on the ground at the same time.
