Which is good ettiquette in the following scenario?

dave travels interstate and catches up with his old friend, liz. they go out to lunch, and one of them will shout the bill. who should pay? dave, as he is the visitor? or liz, as she is the host (it is her hometown)? i know most of the time they would pay half each, but i would like to know which is more customary- the visitor or the host paying.

It really depends which part of the world you belong and what are your customs. Usually, hosts feed their guests. However here I believe anyone pay it as close friends do not care about formalities.

It is more customary for the host to pay.  But I would consider the following:

1. The more capable pays.

If they're equally capable,

2. The one who invited should be more inclined to pay.

If seeing each other was a mutual decision,

3. Dave, being the man, should pay.

If they're really close friends and gender is not a consideration,

then there is really no issue on who pays.  The other just at least offers dessert or coffee to return the favor.

Because Dave has traveled to visit Liz she should pay the bill. I'm guessing because you said interstate,  it's quite a distance and he's paying for the gas. The only polite thing for her to do is assume the bill is half the cost of his visit.

Do you suggest that Dave should pay because Liz is a woman, what if it was two men who met up for lunch instead?  If one person invites another person out to lunch, depending on their relationship then the person who did the asking should pay.  It's not a gender issue.  If Dave and Liz are more than friends then it is a date and Liz has asked Dave out on a date and we are living in 2008 what is the problem with her paying?

The correct thing is for the man to pay. The p.c. thing to do is split the bill. The best is for them both to hit the john and sneak out a window.

the more customary is for the host to pay, but in this case it is more polite and gracious for the man to pay. but if you really cant decide they should spit it, but all in all, dave should pay.
