  1. "special" school? meaning for the slow ones?...what kind of retarted question is this?!

  2. I assume you are talking about mainstream classroom/schools versus schools for people with learning/behavior disorders.  Clarify when asking your questions.  I think the answer to that question depends are if you need the extra help and attention of a teacher to succeed academically.  Mainstream schools are great for the mainstream students, and students with special needs usually don't do so well in a mainstream classroom.  And vice versa.  I don't think you can pick on over the other.

  3. That depends on the childs abilty to manage with mainstream school

My son has struggled and he is far from slow .. infact he is very intelligent on things he is intrested in

He starts a special school in december as he needs much more help than a mainstream environment can offer him

He will benefit as the teachers have a more in depth understanding of his disabilty and i feel he wil lcome on in leaps and bounds

  4. Depends as to how some one copes with social inclusion and how they would manage in a mainstream school. Without knowing the details of an individual case it is impossible to say.

  5. I think special ,that is why it could special

  6. It depends!  Some people even think home-schooling is better.  I really depends on the one who is trying to learn.  You can't compare unless you visit both types and particularly the ones that pertain to you.  Is the student pretty independent or do they need all the help they can get?  These are important considerations and I believe that the parent is the best one to decide as long as they stay informed and active in their child's environment.  Which PTA is better?  Find out by going!

  7. Crazykia, this is the special ed section, so we can assume they are asking about mainstreaming special ed kids or just keeping them in a special ed school.

I think they should be mainstreamed as much as possible and they can handle.  I have a child with autism and she's high functioning.   She has EC class for 1 hour and 20 minutes, the rest of the day, she's with her regular class. She's doing great!!!

This question is a situation by situation question. Kids with severe issues and severe diagnoses will probably do better in a special school.  However, the teachers of regular ed are becoming more specialized to deal with more types of learning disabilities. So, in the future, there might be less of a need for special schools, on a whole...

As a parent, you must do what is best for your child and what is best for your family. some parents give their child over to a group home, that's not for me, but my circumstances don't warrant it either. My child is not a hazard to me or herself.

  8. Hi,

you really need to look at the options in your area for your child.  Visit a few main streem schools in you area and ask them directly.  What would my child be doing in the classroom?  How will his/her breaks be handled?  What educational provisions can you make?

Then visit the special school and ask the same things.  Think about where you child is at and the problems that have made you think about a special school.  Remember the decision is your and no one should take that away from you.  However also ask those professionals that know your child what they feel would be best for him/her.

Finally remember that there are good and bad teachers/schools in every setting.  It may be worth it to drive 5 more minutes up the road and see what other schools offer.  Good Luck with this hard decision - you could consider having a "trial" in the mainstream to see how everyone goes.  That is a popular choice sometimes.

    Good luck J

  9. are you talking about high school or college

  10. Special schools are better because of the camaraderie of the staff.  Mainstream schools on the other hand aren't doing well in regards to special needs students.  When they are treating them better, I will probably say mainstream school is better but for now it is special school.

  11. I head they're trying to send special kids to mainstream schools more often now. Is this a good idea? I'm not sure if I agree. I guess the question you gotta ask youself is if you would want to subject your kid to special school, or to being in special ed. My HS made fun of special ed kids pretty bad. But there were also kids that were in special ed that I didnt know about it until they told me. This is a good question. I'm conflicted. I have a child with vision problems, and they want to send him to regular school. I dont know what to think at this point.
