    or dial, There is clearance in the slide bar of a caliper which is about as a rule .5 to 1.5 away form the slide and according to the sine of the clearance value you exaggerate the "slop" in the slide the farther away from the slide you measure, A micrometer uses a close ground and lapped thread and your measurement pressure presses against the thread and acts as a positive stop but it's only as accurate as the ground s***w.
