This is similar to another question asked a few minutes ago by someone else. I don't know if my question even has an answer, but this is my first child and I was wondering: In your first pregnancy, will you have contractions, or bloody show, or will your water break? I mean, do first time moms usually have contractions that let them know? I'm just wondering. I have a couple friends who recently had their first babies and had contractions first.

  1. I had a baby boy last summer (my first and only so far).  I had 22 hours of active labor (strong contractions) BEFORE I went to the hospital.  I when I got there I had bloody show, thinking that was my water breaking (at least that's what I had imagined it would feel like).  I was there 3 more hours before he was born.  My midwife broke my water as I was pushing.

  2. with my 1st baby my water broke a week before i gave birth. i was admitted to hospital immediately. i didn't see any show or whatever but my husband said i was lying down in the c posiiton and didnt notice it but he saw! eheee.....dunno about the second one though....still waiting for the end of the year to find out.

  3. With my daughter (my 1 and only pregnancy), my water broke first, then i had a bloody show/lost my mucous plug, and then i started having contractions.  Every pregnancy is different though.

  4. Every pregnancy/labor is different only time will tell but you will have some signs no matter what.

Tonys girl are you trying to say only 10% of womens water breaks as the 1st sign of labor or that drs are breaking the bags of water on 90% of women?  I would not be shocked if the drs were but if so where did you get that at it is pathetic.

A womens water will break if left alone and the baby can actually be born in an intact water bag.

    If I misunderstood you sorry.

  5. With all 3 of my births, I first had bloody show (mucus plug) ... and then within a couple hours was having contractions. My water did not break until I was  9cm dilated!!!

  6. i had nothing with my first one...started as contactions.

second one, my water leaked before anything started.

  7. With my first - it was losing my mucous plug (like 2 weeks before) and then labor started with cramping that turned into contractions.

With #2 - my water broke

    With #3 - I was induced

More than likely - it will start out with contractions.  Few mommies start labor with their water breaking as the first sign, although I did and my cousin, but it's not as common as you think.

  8. I started having Back Contractions about 4 weeks before I had my son. I was induced when i was 38 weeks due that and they thought my baby was too small and in trouble.

Everyone is different. The best advice about your water breaking is that it feels like hot water rushing down your legs and you think you are almost bleeding. dont freak though. my mom was with me when they broke my water and told me that.

good luck with the baby. it is so much fun!!

  9. I STARTED WITH CONTRACTIONS. THE DOCTOR BROKE MY WATER FOR ME. YOU WILL KNOW WHEN YOU START CONTRACTING. IT DIDN'T HIT ME HARD AT FIRST. I FELT MY STOMACH START CRAMPING LIKE YOU WOULD BEFORE A PERIOD AND AS THE HOURS PASSED THEY GOT WORSE AND CLOSER TOGETHER.

  10. I just had my first baby and i never lost the mucus plug and my water never got broke they had to break it when i was 4 to 5 cm dialated. I had contractions but they were very irregular and i went into labor at 9:30 in the morning and had my baby by 1:43 i went from 3 cm to 10 in less than a hour but idk its different for everyone and also i only pushed for 23 min and half that time i was not allowed to push she was coming on her own but trust me you will know when you go into labor

    upset stomach

contractions regular or irregular but painful

    water breaks

    mucus plug

  11. With my first, I had bloody show at the same time that the contractions started. My water didn't break until the end. I think it just depends. In other words, it is difficult to predict.

  12. it all depends on you. with my first, my doctor scraped my membranes, (mucus plug) and then a few days later, (2 days before my due date) my water broke. i actually didnt start having contractions until like 5 hours after my water broke, so it was nice.

mom to mom, GET THE EPIDURAL! it was amazing! i had a 9 pounder and i didnt feel a thing. im due dec 10th, and i will be getting another with my son.

    congrats!

  13. my dr took out my plug and loosened my memebranes. but nothing happened, i had small contractions and my water broke first, but it wasnt like that with the other 2.

  14. With my son, I was dialating weeks prior which is normal, I was contracting irregularly for 2 days. And I went in for a prenatal checkup and my blood pressure was extremely high, so I had to go straight to the hospital, and get induced.

So you really never do know, I mean Im only 19 and never would have thought I would have to be induced...basically everything I planned...well it went the other direction.

They induced me with pitocin at 5, then *they* broke my water at idk 6. ANd when they induced me I was already 4 cm. At 8cm I took the epidural though, probably like 9-9:30..And then it all slowed down. I only pushed for 45 minutes though! Thank goodness!

Good Luck, and congrats to youuu!!!

  15. Only 10% of women's water breaks on its own so don't expect that to be the way that you know you are in labor. All of the symptoms you listed are possible but not guaranteed. Most likely you will have contractions but some women say they never feel them. I think contractions are the most common symptom though that you woul notice.

  16. My water broke the first time.  no contractions.

The second time I was induced.
