  1. Yes, whisky/whiskey has to be a minimum of 40% alcohol to be called whiskey/whisky. You can have whiskys at many different alcoholic concentrations. It is usually put into a cask at between 60 and 70 percent alcohol. I the colder climated of northern Europe, the alcohol content decreases over time, while in the hotter climated of North America, the alcohol contend actually increases, relitavely.

Most of the whiskeys you seen for sale are diluted down to about 40 to 45 percent abv, but there are several cask strength versions for sale.

Rums also come in different proofs.  In Colombia, their rum possess a minimum alcohol content of 50 percent abv, while Chile and Venezuela require only a minimum of 40 percent abv.

So when it comes to concentration, it varies between both products, so you can't really say one general type is stronger than the other.

  2. It's not a matter of "concentration" but rather a matter of distillation and alcohol content.  The two alcohols are processed completely differently, but on average, rum is about 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume), whereas whisky -- on average -- is roughly only 70 proof (35% alcohol by volume).  So based on that, rum would be the stronger of the two alcohols.

  3. Whiskey is

  4. whisky is for sure

  5. Contrary to “Brutally Honest” contributor:

Rums are Light, Gold, Spiced, Dark, Premium & “Overproof”. The last one has much higher than the standard 40% alcohol. Most of these overproof rums bear greater than 75%, in fact, and preparations of 151 to 160 proof occur commonly.

As for whiskey, there are several major types: Scotch whiskey, Irish whiskey, Canadian (rye) whiskey, American (corn) whiskey… In terms of “strength” whiskeys are between 40% to 60% alcohol.

  6. dark rum :]

  7. There is such a variety of rum and whiskey that it really depends on the type you get. The concentration can vary in either, from 27% to 40%, and sometimes even higher.

As for dark or light rum, the situation is the same. Bacardi for instance has both and each of them are 40%. Wray & Nephew goes upto 60% I believe, and it is white rum.

  8. Like others have said, it depends on how it was made as to how strong it will be. I just checked a few bottles and my Gentleman Jack Whiskey and Appleton Special Rum were both 40% alcohol, but my Malibu Rum was only 21%. Now if I happened to be out of Appleton and someone were to only look at the bottle of Malibu to compare to the Gentleman Jack, their opinion might have been that whiskey is stronger than rum. But if I brought home a bottle of Bacardi 151 rum, that would change their answer. It just depends on the brand and how it was made.
