Question:

Which is more expensive to live in New York or Los Angeles?

From my research it seems like New York is more expensive to visit but I hear more people from L.A complaining about how expensive it is to live in LA than I hear New Yorkers complain about how expensive it is to live there.

Don't get me wrong I have heard and KNOW that New York is an expensive place to live but usually the first complaint I hear from people from LA is that it's too expensive. In New York on the other hand the first thing is usually crime, homelessness, or being crowded.

I would think New York's more expensive since it's the largest, but from word of mouth I'd think LA.....

Which is it?

  1. Los Angeles.. NO COMPETITION!!!

Cheapest rent that I can find is at $1000 (and it's just a REALLY SMALL 500sq. ft. 1bd 1ba apartment)

You need a car to survive in L.A. (gas is at $4.00+, include insurance, and maintenance)

An $8.00 an hour job is NOT going to help you out.

  2. Definitely, L.A. is more expensive. Wait, let me explain people.

When people talk about NYC, they're 90% only speaking of Manhattan. Yes, Manhattan is the most expensive place to buy housing, but as far as the cost of living I would definitely say it's L.A.

And most of my friends from NYC living in L.A. will tell you that or they will say it's mostly that same. They say this, because most New Yorkers live in the outer boroughs: Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island.

And those places (outer boroughs) are not as expensive as Westwood, Santa Monica, West L.A. etc

And on top of that, you have to consider that most New Yorkers depend on public transportation, so let's just say in L.A. the average car note is about $500 and you probably spend about $130 on insurance, and I don't even have to mention gas...so go fiigure.

California (state wise) has always been more expensive to buy a home/live...because of the weather and the natural beauty. Manhattan (borough wise) is the most expensive to buy and rent, due to it's location and high density.

And by the way, it cost more money to buy a home in S.F, Orange County, and San Diego county, than Los Angeles.

  3. of course ny is more expensive

  4. L.A. Is More Expensive Then N.Y.

  5. New Yorkers don't have to pay for car insurance or gas.

  6. Housing is much more expensive in NYC.  On top of that, in the last year house prices have gone down everywhere in the country EXCEPT NYC.  L.A. County (and Southern Cal) might be expensive, but NYC has it beat.

  7. Both NYC and L.A. are outrageous, but I think L.A. wouldn't be quite as high, depending on the neighborhood. A decent 2 bedroom in a good area in West L.A., Centry City, Westwood would go for about $2000.00 a month. Maybe a little less in the fairfax district and now that they've built up the downtown are, probably the same. If you like lofts, downtown L.A. has some terrific ones.
