Money.  A company or corporation exists only to make money.  They have no conscience or ethics.  Success is measured entirely by return on investment.

Humans are important only in that they make money for the company.  If the company can make more money by laying off half the workforce and working the other half mandatory overtime, they'll do that.  If they can make more money by exporting all the jobs overseas, they will do that, and they will support despotic government overseas that keep wages low.
