An aldehyde, R-CHO, is more reactive than a ketone, R-CO-R, because it has only one electron-donating alkyl group directly connected to the carbonyl carbon atom while a ketone, by definition, is di-substituted. The end result is that the carbonyl carbon atom of an aldehyde is more electropositive than that of a ketone and is, therefore, more reactive towards nucleophilic attack.
