1. I'd say they are equal in terms of danger. Both firefighters and police officers can be killed in accidents trying to respond to emergencies. Firefighters also face dangers like roofs, floors or walls collapsing as well as explosions. They are also exposed to hazardous chemicals. Police officers also face dangers like suspects shooting them, attacking them with knives or needles. Oops, I forgot to add that corrections officer face the dangers of unstable inmates attacking and killing them.

  2. If you look at statistics you can make them say anything you want. A friend of mine is a firefighter who says firefighting is more dangerous because several firefighters die at one time from a fire. Police officers say theirs is more dangerous because any call or traffic stop can go wrong, and they answer more calls than firefighters. Etc, etc. Having held both jobs, I know that being a cop is more dangerous than being a firefighter. In three years of being a firefighter, never injured on the job. In 28 years of being a cop, wound up in the ER more than a dozen times, and 70 or more times hurt but not ER bad.

  3. Do you want to burn to death or be shot?

  4. None of these is the most dangerous job (in America) once you account for injuries besides death, visit http://health.howstuffworks.com/10-most-... for a list of the top 10.

That said, I've known quite a few corrections officers who never had any real physical harm come to them, although I've heard some people are unable to endure spending all their work time in a prison.

When you count only fatalities, police had more deaths in 2007 than firefighters, according to this article at http://choosing-careers.suite101.com/art...

  5. Firefighter. Once you inhale a good amount of smoke, your lungs are damaged and that could be only after a month or two on the job.

  6. I have personally worked as a police officer and a correctional officer. Correctional officers as a general rule are not armed within the prison. many times the inmates are. they make home made deadly weapons and the correctional officers walk their beat unarmed.

The only officers that are armed are not within the prison walls usually with the exception of the cell block cat walk officers who carry a mini 14 rifle.

Police Officers on the other hand are armed with their side arm, usually a shotgun mounted within the patrol car and semi-automatice rifles also within the patrol units. baton, tear gas etc.

  7. cops

  8. IDK...they are ALL rewarding professions..I have an M.Ed in Mental Health. Even though that is not what you mentioned, it is closer related to corrections. I have done internships on a Psych. ward, so I have saw a lot of things. I guess I would have to say corrections though because you are dealing with people who rande from non-violent offenses to serious offenses...
