  1. The micrometer is more accurate and also more difficult to use. It's much more sensitive to the way the reading is made (hence the torsion controlled thumb-s***w) and is usually limited in range. To measure a large range usually requires several tools (ie a 0-1", a 1" to 2", a 2" to 3", ect). The micrometer is also usually more for thickness and outside measurements.

The vernier caliper is much easier to use. It is available for reasonable prices in both analog dial format as well as digital with the digital units able to measure in both inch and metric. The vernier calipers come in sizes of 0 to 4", 0 to 6", 0 to 12" and even larger. They also are designed for inside measurements, outside measurements, and depth measurements. Very versatile and very easy to use. What you give up is accuracy. A good vernier caliper is accurate to 0.001 to 0.002" with a resolution of 0.0005". A decent micrometer is usually accurate to 0.0001" with a resolution of better then 0.00005".  I have both types but use the vernier caliper 95% of the time (so often that I have several of them, one with a dial and two digital ones). If you're buying just one, buy a vernier caliper first.

  2. i think the vernier caliper , personally i didn't like the micrometer , it takes time to get it's zero error , & u can measure diameters with the vernier as well

  3. verniers can usually cover a much larger range of length

micrometers cover a smaller range but are more accurate
