  1. I think the polynesian islanders have more credibility than do New Zealand in their origins and cultural authenticity, is New Zealand really still a Moari culture?

The original all blacks haka (Te Rauparaha Haka) dates to 1810 when chief Te Rauparaha of the Ngāti Toa iwi (clan or tribe) was being chased by enemies, he hid in a food-storage pit under the skirt of a woman. Because this was an unthinkable thing for a chief to do, Te Rauparaha thought he would be safe. He climbed out to find someone standing over him, who, instead of killing Te Rauparaha, turned out to be another chief friendly to Te Rauparaha. In relief Te Rauparaha performed a haka  .... you can pass your own judgement on that.

In 2005 the All Blacks performed a new Haka against South Africa and retain it for "Special Occasions" (Kapa o pango haka),specially written for them, if that isn't a breakwaway from any claim at cultural heritage I don't know what is, and have you seen the pathetic excuses for the throat slitting gestures? I dont care what they reckon it is it's offensive and shouldn't be allowed.

Why is it that the All Blacks are so pampered by the IRB and Competition organisiers, the Haka is meant as a challenge, why are they publicly allowed to throw down that challenge when visiting other nations without allowing the other nation the opportunity to respond, yep okay keep it when a nation visits New Zealand but why be allowed to attempt to gain a phsycological advantage all the time.

Richard Cockerill (1997) stood toe to toe with his opposite number when the All Blacks performed the Haka at Twickenham, Cockerill was disciplined for provoking the All Blacks..... hang on a minute isn't the Haka a provocation.

The World Cup organisers for the 1999 World Cup then warned England not to provoke the All Blacks when they were performing the Haka, this was after the Tongans confronted the All Blacks with an impromtu polynesian war dance, isn't that what the All Blacks were doing anyway.

They actually wrote to every team in the tournament asking them to respect their opponents.... wonder if they wrote to the All Blacks with that one.

When Wales insisted (2006) that the Welsh National Anthem be the last thing played before the match (ie the haka be performed before it) the New Zealand team argued then got all upset and performed it in their changing room, this was a game being played in CARDIFF.

The All Blacks at the moment are justifiably ranked number one on the planet but there is a lot that goes on in southern hemisphere rugby that the IRB should be taken to task over.

Sorry I went on a bit there, but to answer your question, you have the origins of the All Blacks haka above (tribal Chief grass skirt hole in threground thing) the Tongan version given at the Tonga V New Zealand game 1999 World Cup was a Polynesian War Dance, dont know the origins or words but I think that says enough in itself.

  2. Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and New Zealand all have different types of pre match rituals all for the sole purpose of drawing strength from the Rugby Gods. Since i am Fijian, you can check out www.teivovo.com for a video of the the "CIBI" (prounounced thee be)

  3. Not sure but one of the smaller island teams (maybe the cook islands) have a war cry which goes "We are Cannibals and will eat your head" which would scare the bejesus out of me.

As for you question the newer NZ one where they slit their throuts at the end. They use it every now and then, for the big games.
