Does the county jail have nicer accommodations or the state prison in the U.S.? Having never served a sentence in either one, but with an acquaintance who is in the state prison after being in the county jail for six months, can you kindly inform me which prison do inmates prefer? And why? Do they look forward to being transferred to the state prison? Thanks.

  1. Nicer?  Lol.

  2. Having worked both for a total of 24 years plus the feedback I get from inmates, I will definetely say prison is better for quality of "life". I will quantify this statement that I am referring to what the inmates are allowed to do.

In county jail, an inmate will literally sit all day staring at the walls and a tv set. Play cards or listen to music. You dont leave the cell block. Your meals are brought to you. The nurse brings the med cart to the block. The only time you get out is for court, a visit or getting a haircut.

In prison, there is more personal movement. Inside and outside recreation. You leave the block to go to meals and medical. Prisons are established in seperate buildings so anything that is done requires movement. There is more offered during recreation. Most blocks have a small library of used books for the inmates.

The downside of prison is that the inmate is convicted. Jail is presentence and offers a possibility of release. But from the feedback I have been given, particularly from inmates returning from court, they are actually glad to be back in prison over the county jail.

I hope this helps and you can find it useful

  3. County jail would probably be better. Never been incarcerated; I have only visited Los Angeles County Jail and Folsom State prison... they both suck.

  4. Wow, that's like saying " which do you prefer, a nail in the hand or one in the foot?'" Jail sucks. Prison sucks worse. Does that help?

  5. Well I worked in both and have family in both. And hearing from inmates State prisons have better accomodations, rehabilitation programs and the necessity of weights LOL

Oh and here in pa they have Cable tv in state prison. Our tax dollars are high at work.

  6. County Jail is much nicer than Prison.

  7. Definitely prison!!

  8. I agree with night rider.  Let me tell you not everyone doing time is guilty of a crime and the courts don't give a hoot.  It is all a big money making scam.
