They are both safe countries. Just follow the same precautions you take at home. Don't flash your money, jewelry, walk around in dark places late at night, don't get sloppy drunk, don't try to buy drugs and most of all be respectful of the locals.

Unfortunately, crime is every where you go. Just stay under the radar and you will have a wonderful vacation in Mexico or Dominican Republic.
