  1. French Canadians make it very difficult for non-french speakers to live there, whcih is why a lot of english only people left. I would not recommend it.

  2. Per Wikipedia: "In terms of first language learned (in infancy), the 2001 census reported that on the island of Montreal itself, 53% spoke French as a first language, followed by English at 18%. The remaining 29% percentage is made up of many languages including Italian (3.6%), Arabic (2.1%), Spanish (1.9%), Chinese (1.2%), Greek (1.21%), Creole (predominantly of Haitian origin) (1.0%), Portuguese (0.9%), Romanian (0.7%), Vietnamese (0.6%), and Polish (0.4%)". You could spend your whole life speaking only English in Montreal, as you could spend your life speaking only Italian in New York or Spanish in Los Angeles. But if you don"t learn the language of the majority, you will miss out on a lot of opportunities (social and career).

  3. French is spoken more, but there is a fair amount of English also. The farer that you go from downtown, the less English is spoken, especially once you get out of Montréal proper. I have been to Montréal several times and I have always found French-Canadians to be polite and helpful, whether I was using English or my mangled French. I think a lot of how people respond to you is your attitude > after all the French were in Quebec first and the English had very repressive policies for years.

Learn how to ask 'parlez-vous anglais?' (do you speak English?) when approaching someone Quebecois or French speaking and you will have a better reaction!

  4. on the island of montreal and downtown itself, there is a lot of english spoken as well as in some areas which speak mostly english. however, the majority of people speak french. it would be ok for someone who does no know french to live and work in montreal although there are a lot less opportunities. but its never too late to learn some french.
