  1. First, do as you would for ANY job. Research the companies on the net.

Then see if you can talk to drivers from companies you are interested in or are interested in you. Your local truck stop comes to mind for this.

Ask the drivers what type of training program is offered by their company and if they, after being on the road for a few years, think it is comprehensive enough. Ask how they've been treated. Ask about company benefits. Ask if the company "slip-seats" drivers or assigns a permenant truck. Ask how hard it is to get the truck fixed when something goes wrong. Ask about paid "dead head" miles, who loads the truck and lumper pay if you find yourself in that situation, sick leave/pay, time home. Ask how *hard* one is REQUIRED to run...this is a BIGGIE!

In other words, get out there and do some one on one research to get an idea of how these companies treat their drivers. There are many, many questions you can get answered simply by surveying as many drivers from a particular company as possible.

***EDIT: The guy below me supplied you with a site to visit along with his very real view and advice. I have another site that has all kinds of info that you might find useful in addition to their forum. Here it is:

I hope you find it helpful.

If/when you do get out there, be sure to "keep it between the ditches and smokey off your britches!" In doing so you should be able to "keep the shiney side down and the greasey side up!"

BTW: Don't worry if "your fifth wheel is flat".  ;) LOL!

    Good Luck!!!! Be safe!  :D

  2. Check out the many websites for truckers. thetruckersreport.com comes to mind. Most have forums for drivers to whine. Also go visit with drivers at the local truckstop. But in reality, all companies are about the same, they all treat their company drivers with no respect. Flatbed driving pays the most, but it is the hardest. Also on the web, check out the "safestat" of companies. Good luck
