We have few in the US. I understand Europe has many good deisel cars with high fuel economy. I would lie to learn more about them.

  1. John forgot the Opel range (GM).  Smallest diesel is the 90 bhp 1.3 unit shared with Fiat. I dont drive the smallest but my 100 bhp 1.7 litre unit does all that I want it to do.  The Astra is not the smallest car but is comfortable, economic and quite fast enough.  If you have ever dreamt of 50 to 60 mpg in practice not just in tests, Europe has loads of choice.  but not all cars are available in all countries and some European countries tax diesel cars heavily so they dont sell so well there.  Check out www.opel.com and browse the press / news sections especially now just after the motor show.

  2. The peugeot 207 1.6 hdi gets 62.7 (UK) mpg

The VW Lupo diesel is a very small car getting over 70mpg.

The Renault Clio diesel will get about the same.

Nearly all European cars will have a diesel option of their small hatchbacks. Also take a look at Citroen C2 Diesel.

The Uk model Accord 2.2 liter Diesel gets great mpg but its not a European.

Check out the car makers websites at

    www.volkswagen.co.uk

    www.renault.co.uk

    www.citroen.co.uk

    www.peugeot.co.uk

These are mostly manual trans cars and that helps with the mpg. Remember to concert these mpg figures from imperial gallons to US gallons before you quote them!
