From my experience and from others', Air France is notorious for malfunctions and whatnot. The best airline I've traveled with has been SwissAir. Their website for more information: swiss.com

Air France will always be your best direct route. KLM might work form some connecting airlines here in the US. I'd watch for time on what you find because you can end up all over the time spectrum waiting on your connecting flight going to Phoenix. Sometimes you can get the Air France Deal out of New York and find the deal US Air out of Phoenix ( I believe US Air is the big one there) to NY e $750 and averaging about 1000.
