first you have to remember that Anti Virus software is always behind the baddies who create virus's. The best Anti Virus for me is Avast Home Edition (free version). Others like AVG (free). Norton uses a lot of system reources and slows your computer and does not do a good job of protection. ZoneAlarm makes a good suite (Anti Virus, Spyware, Firewall) and is not expensive.

If you can want a free one, I recommend you to go to www.download.com, and download AVG free edition, works very good, or avast home edition. those 2 are the best free antivirus software, in my opinion.

You don't really need to pay for an antivirus, this free ones should help you out with any problem.

But if you want to pay, there is a very big variaty, kaspersky, the shield deluxe 2008, CA Antivirus, Norman, Bit Defender.

There is no one BEST program for everyone!  Each person's individual computer usage is completely different.  Some folks download illegal programs and music, which exposes them to more infections than any other behavior.  Some folks only read their email and do some light surfing.

Because usage is different, the appropriate software is different for everyone.  Most of the time, several programs are necessary to maintain a full range of security.

Any one of these would probably work well for you!  Read the reviews to be sure.

ANTI-SPYWARE:

Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100% accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need at least two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.
