  1. First of all, "which is the best" questions about *anything* are meaningless, unless you specify which are the criteria important to you. Detection rate, disinfection rate, memory footprint, speed, features, price, etc. - these are all different critaria for an anti-virus program that are differently important to the different people, different anti-virus programs are "best" depending on which criteria you pick as the most important - and, no, no anti-virus program is "best" according to all of them.

Second, something in what you said does not make sense - either because you're making false assumptions or because you have omitted important information from your question.

You see, viruses that infect a PC cannot infect a mobile phone - just like any other PC program won't work on the phone and vice versa. Now, if the phone looks like an USB drive when attached to the PC, and if the PC is infected with some particular kinds of viruses, the virus can copy itself to the phone. However, it will be inert there - it won't be able to run on the phone and it won't even be able to infect another PC (because autoplay doesn't work for USB drives) - so, technically, the phone won't be infected, even if it contains a copy of the (PC) virus.

However, there are two problems with the above scenario. First, your phone uses the Symbian S60 R2 operating system. As far as I know, R2 phones (unlike the R3 phones) do not look like disk drives when connected to a PC. You need the Nokia PC Suite to copy information to and from the phone. This matches your experience that the anti-virus program on the PC cannot scan the phone - it simply doesn't see the phone's file system. However, this also means that a PC virus won't be able to copy itself to the phone, either.

Second, if your PC was infected, your PC-based anti-virus program would have detected that - and it did not.

So, I very much doubt that what you are saying is true. Instead, there are two possible alternatives.

First, your phone does not contain any viruses. You did not tell us why you have decided that it has a virus (i.e., what symptoms you're observing). Many people automatically think "virus" when their phone acts weird, which is usually the result of some hardware failure or of some misinstalled application. Until you provide us more information on this subject, I cannot tell whether this is indeed what is happening. If it is, then a mobile phone anti-virus program isn't going to help you.

Second, it is possible that your phone is infected with a mobile phone virus - but it did *not* come from the PC. Your phone is indeed one of those for which mobile phone viruses are relatively widespread - but they spread phone-to-phone - not PC-to-phone. They usually spread via Bluetooth file transfer, MMS (*not* SMS) messages and MMC card exchange.

Again, I need the exact symptoms that you're observing. I'm pretty familiar with all existing viruses for mobile phones and will be able to determine if these symptoms are indeed caused by a virus or not. If they are, a mobile phone anti-virus program will help.

  2. The antivirus from the PC protects your computer from the viruses that target the OS you run on that PC, it will not try to catch viruses targeting other OSs, it simply cannot understand any of that code.

Thus, you need an antivirus for the phone and as far as I know F-Secure is a good one to have for your Symbian OS phone.
