i'm looking at the 2005 Honda TRX300EX Sport Quad ATV but i want something inexpensive...like under $2000. But it still has to be lightweight, durable, fast, etc. I'm not looking at utility atv, i want a sport atv.

  1. The 300 is a good machine, but it is not very fast, and not very good as a sport quad.

If you watch the used market you can get better faster, but a bit older machines for around $2000. Keep an eye out for a 400EX, Z400, raptor 660, or a polaris predator 500. All are great durable machines that will leave you happier then the 300 would

  2. go to craiglist, if i spelled it right, and find your area, youll find alot of quads in that price range and alot bigger... the 450 is pretty rediculously fast! and the 400 is reliable and pretty fast...

oh you answered my question about changin the top end in my 230 and you said i proly didnt rejet it, i did, i found out i had bad gas in it and made it back fire alot and it filed the plug, cause i changed it all and it ran amazing. its running good now. thanks though

    good luck with quad

  3. the honda 300ex is a good machine its a bit slow and a bit heavy for what it is, but a good over all bike. i would recomend the honda 400EX

  4. I had two Kawasaki Mojave 250s, and I ride in the woods, so if you're out in the desert then disregard this answer and go for the "rapter"- if you can't spell it, don't endorse it.

Anyway, if you ride in the woods or on forest service roads, a Mojave will do anything a 300EX will. When I rode at the Kentuck ORV trail system last, I ran off and left two dudes for dead- one was on a built 300EX and the other was on a Warrior 350. They were doing that Southern version of talking smack, like "well I hope you can see the trail with all the dust we're gonna be kickin uuuuuhp" and I stomped their ever-loving butts.

A Mojave is liquid-cooled, so you can't overheat it unless it's broken. It revs high and clean and it will flat tear a trail to pieces. It has a shorter wheelbase than a lot of quads so it can be spun around a tight corner easily. Couple of hints: I got a 5" wheel spacer for the rears, had it cut into two 2.5" spacers, and installed that in the back. I also found out that a Lakota Sport swingarm is a direct fit, and it's around 2" longer, so it kept the front end planted. I put a Big Gun ceramic exhaust on, jetted it per their recommendations, and when I ran this thing along with my other one (that I left stock) the difference was unbelievable.

I long ago got over the "size matters" thing when I realized my riding skill was what mattered. Our parts guy at the shop bought a 660cc Raptor, like an idiot, and he got embarrassed by my 250s every single time we went riding.  So I'm SOLD on the Mojaves. I've worked on bikes and ATVs for 20 years and I've owned literally dozens of them. I also looked on Cycle Trader and did a nationwide sweep for Mojaves and found 17 of them. Only 3 or 4 were more than $2000. :)

I saw answers that completely ignored your requirements. THIS answer addresses them all, and if you can, find some feller who has a Mojave and follow him into the woods. Good luck keeping up with him.

    Have fun, be safe.
