I cannot tell you which is the best brand because so many people have their favorites.   It also depends on if you are wanting a professional or mid range SLR.    Nikon has a wide range of lenses that are specifically designed to fit on all Nikon cameras... from those made in the 60's to the current model, so you have a wide selection to choose from.   Canon makes nice film SLRs...  with the EOS models.  It is more important for you to know that, though the camera is the device which allows you to take the pictures,  it is the lens that actually makes the image what it is.  Poor lens..  Poor image quality.    You have so many cameras to choose from and I would be thinking about buying a used one... since they are a great bargain now and if you are thinking "used"  Keep checking Craig's List in your area.   Nikon 8008,  Nikon N90 or N90s,  Nikon F100.   These are models that I have had experience with and can verify to be good.
