Which is the best city to live in , in Australia ?

Im 19 and me and my best friend are planning to move to Australia ... We are newly qualified Midwifes , and we currently live in England , we want to live somewere were it really laid back , were we can find work , and theres a beach near by ...

So which do you think is the best town / city for us ? =]

Definetly Bronte, its on the north shore of Sydney, it has a killer nightlife and heaps of beaches. If you want somewhere more laid back, check out some of the mellow places on the east coast of NSW. Like Thirroul, Coledale they are gorgeous suburbs right on the beach. Its about 10 minutes from Wollongong city which has alot of work available. Also depends how much you would like to spend. It gets dearer as you get closer to the coast, but there are less expensive houses towards the moutains. Check out Google.Maps and look up Thirroul, Coledale, Austinmer, Wollongong, Bronte, Taree, Noosa.. Just to name a few lovely east coast places.

You want laid back, don't go to Sydney or Melbourne and maybe not even Brisbane.  You want a nearby beach?  The Gold Coast including Southport (hospital) or Surfers Paradise is the best bet.  Nightlife would be better than in most places outside Syd., Melb. or Bris.    

Also the Sunshine Coast  - Noosa, Alexandra Headlands, Mooloolaba  down as far as Caloundra is another possibility.  

Or really do something different and maybe Bundaberg, population around 40,000 and 7 miles from good beaches at Bargara.  No parking problems at all.  Hospital at Bundaberg

Alternately Townsville, 100,000 population, beaches nearby but not right in the city area. Close to the Gt. Barrier Reef.  Hospitals in Townsville.

Much further south, places like Kiama and Bateman's Bay have great beaches, not too far from Sydney and you can easily go skiing in the winter after 3 - 4 hours in a car.

Sydney. Theres a decent amount of jobs there for midwives. Its got the best beaches. You can choose to live in the inner city although it would be a bit more expensive or venture out into the outer suburbs (Parramatta and heaps more) they are all reasonably close to the city with cheaper housing. And public transport is great. You can get everywhere and anywhere without owing a car from anywhere in Sydney.

Note there is Sydney (CBD/City) and Sydney (Greater Sydney/Suburbs) and no matter where you live it will be GREAT!

Beaches are real close, you wont have to travel far to get to a beach in Sydney. If your in Melbourne its a long drive to the beach.

Queensland weather is hotter than Sydney and Melbourne. Melbourne can experience four seasons in one day. Sydney has nice weather.

And as I said before, theres heaps of jobs for midwives in Sydney.

If you want laid back, go into the suburbs of Sydney. I reccomend Parramatta for affordable living, laid back place but busy if you want it to be and vice versa.

we've got everything

the best - culture, sporting events, shopping

but i guess we do lack a nice beach in the city...st kilda is c**p, middle park is alright

sydney has nice beaches but i personally am not a big fan of sydney

like i think sydney's fine to live in when you're young and a busy lifestyle is fine, but i defs wouldnt want to settle there

Everywhere city is surrounded by water, Queensland is the best place in my opinion and to be even more specific The Gold Coast.

Amazing night life, heaps of jobs available.. very social and layed back place to live.

You can check in the local news paper ( the bulletin ) or jobs.

I would have to say Queensland,its very laid back and their are lots of beaches and the weather is allways nice their (except for their wet season of course) but its very tropical and a beautiful part of Australia.   But if you want action and you want to party all night then go to Melbourne,great shopping ,fast pace,Casino excellent clubs,bars n restaurants.

Get a job as agency nurses and then spend time in each city working for the same company. Plenty of jobs for midwives everywhere in Australia as far as I know.

You can find work just about anywhere in Australia, particularly in regional areas. Australia is all laid back compared to other countries, but Sydney and Melbourne less than other places. There are beaches around nearly the whole continent, so what you've described could be anywhere.

Would you prefer a big city, small city, large town, or small town? Humid and hot, or milder? Lots of fun and activity or quiet and family orientated? That will narrow it down a bit.

come to anywhere on the east/souuth coast of victoria.

its really great.

its alot of farm land but alot of small citys and towns are there to.

there are really nice beaches and the nicest ones are at wilsons prom

For beaches, there is nowhere else like the gold coast, research it. Or sydney.

I suppose work is easy to find in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, but Perth is just too far away from anything. Brisbane seems to top the list on the laid back scale, from what i've heard. I live there but I don't see how it is more laid back than anywhere else.

If it was be, I'd move to Melbourne, lots to do there and lots of culture, there aren't a shortage of people either.

Don't be taken in by the boasting of Australians in Britain. I spent a year there, and they are NOT nearly as laid back as they go around telling everyone.

Their opinion of themselves does not match that of others...

come to coffs harbour

it is right in the middle of brisbane and sydney (2 major cities)

and its right on the beach with lovely weather

and the base hospital is very big and hygenic

Anywhere along the east coast. I guess it depends what you're looking for.

The inner city is enormously frustrating from 6am to 8pm (on work days mostly)

The outer city is more of a laid back part of town.

MELBOURNE has some beautiful sites and is beautiful from around maybe sunshine or Caroline Springs/Burnside(to the west of the city)

BRISBANE is located on a river and would probably be best around Carindale (to the south east)

SYDNEY is situated on a harbour that opens to the Tasman sea. The best spot would have to be Manly (to the east) and there are ferries for 1/2 an hour trips from Manly to the Central City.
