MECHANICAL ENGINEERING IS A GENERAL SUBJECT AND CONTAINS MANY ASSOCIATED FIELDS.

YOU CAN JUST STUDY MECH. ENGINEERING OR GO FOR SPECIALIZING IN AUTOMOBILE,POWER PLANT,STEAM RELATED ETC.

BUT POWER ELECTRONICS IS ALREADY A  SPECIALIZED FIELD WHERE YOU CAN STUDY INVERTERS, CONVERTERS, CONTROLLERS,UPS,SERVO STABILISERS,HUGE BATTERY CHARGERS, POWER DRIVES ETC.

Even better is Mechatronics Engineering. This has the advantage of Mechanical Engineering as well as Electronis Engineering and useful in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Aeronautics, Automobile etc.
