Hey Yahoo! Answers members, I have to pick 2 episodes out of all the Planet Earth series to do an ecological review on. Since I still have a little time, I was wondering what everyone opinions are and what are the easiest episodes to spot ecological relationships such as: evolutionary adaptions (structures, survival adaptations, reproduction, etc.), to their ecosystem.

Thanks a lot. :)!

  1. I liked the tropical forest and temperate forest episodes.  I think my favorite part of the series is the small part of tree fall gaps in the tropical forest one.  Something like "when an ancient giant dies, it creates an oasis of light for small seedlings to grow tall!".  I've written whole papers on gap-phase dynamics, and you could get a great section on the evolutionary advantages of the slow, competitive growth strategies of shade tolerant canopy giants.  Go into detail on how trees can live for years in the shady understory and when a tree fall gap is created, they bolt to the canopy.

The tropical episode also has some great footage of flashy birds doing their mating dances.  It shows both successful and unsuccessful mating attempts, and they explain some reasons for failure.  This could make for a good discussion of sexual selection.  Cool stuff!

They are all good episodes though, so you really can't go wrong!

  2. Have you already seen them all?  I loved all of them - I would have a hard time choosing a favorite, but I'd go with an episode that stirs up the most interest in you.

  3. Well,

When the show starts the algore global warming preaching, its time to hit SKIP FORWARD. But most all the shows are OK until the preaching of the lie about human caused global warming, global climate change etc. Its ALL about PROFITS, algore has made OVER $100,000,000 since starting his profit crusade in 2001.GE (the owner of the DISCOVERY Channel and a dozen other cable channels as well as nbc) is making HUGE profits on sell us this GREEN idea, yet the products MANY times are more polluting than the ones that we had before that cost us very little!
