  1. I had a CB750 new in 1973. It was a very good bike. Not so much by todays standards but in the pack back then it stood out.  I also had a 77' F model, same basic engine, simple, effective.

  2. If you really want mpg and cost with reliability, the Honda Rebel 250 is probably up there. Those things can get ridiculous gas mileage and are just over $3k brand new. Simpler engines mean simpler maintenance usually and the foreign bikes have pretty good track records for reliability.

As for the year on anything, it matters more how the bike was maintained. As long as it has had it's scheduled maintenance, an older bike with some miles on it is just fine, especially if you are looking for a first bike. I just bought a 99 shadow ace and ride it 40-50 miles round trip to work and I'm getting 45-50mpg so far and don't have any problems. If you're mechanically inclined, you can buy a Clymer manual that will show you how to maintain as well as fix practically anything on the bike, which will save you lots of $$.

  3. Id say a 650 BMW

They last for ever, and if you drive it at 60 all the time, you will get better fuel mileage than any 750.
