First of all. Safety starts with the owner of the gun. With that said, I would check into Glock and the Springfield XD line.

Better yet, go to a gun shop that has a range and rents firearms. You would be better off trying a few different types of pistols before chunking out several hundreds of dollars. See what works for you! Every shooter has different needs.

For novice shooters, you can't go wrong with a revolver, say .38 spl or .357 mag. Simple, easy to use, and less issues to deal with than a semi. However, as a avid shooter and a CCW pemit holder, I will never stray from semi-automatics.
