Hey guys well I'm in nursing school right now finishing up my pre-reqs. I have been thinking about getting into a short course for either Patient Care Tech or Unit Secretary. I am undecided on which to choose. which route should I take to gain experience and to learn while im working and what exactly does a PCT with phlebotomy and EKG certification does ? I also wanted to know how much do they get pay ? Thanks much.

  1. For more hands-on patient care, the patient care technician/multi-skilled tech sounds more useful for gaining technical skills for nursing.  Please forgo those private $$ schools and instead opt for the county vo-tech school or community college, perhaps non-credit course, as long as it's accredited within the industry.  The patient care tech is usually more cost efficient for hospitals instead of hiring cna's as well as ekg techs and phlebotomists.

Wikipedia albeit Not for school or professional research has more info on pct:  http://www.wikipedia.org and can type into search.

    More info on phlebotomy:  http://www.nationalphlebotomy.org

To learn more about health unit coodinator/unit secretary:  http://www.nahuc.org  That can be quite a stressful job in and of itself, just fyi :)

  2. Both will be great!

  3. PCT. That way you can get some hands on patient care. I truly believe that are nurses should first have to work as nurse's assistants or patient care techs. You will be a better nurse for it.
