yahoo groups work very well when you have friends, family or people with a common interest.  There's lots of space provided for photos messages and other info.

You could start a Yahoo group and set it to allow people to join it only if you invite them.  You can set the access to the group's features according to how you want it.  There's so many ways to personalize a Yahoo group.  I think Yahoo Groups are so much better and can be managed more efficiently than Google, MSN, and other group sites on the internet.

Depending on what your interests are, there are numerous forums where you can interact privately.

I am a moderator of a group for free on-line and off-line mom and pop advertising, and I'm also a member of many others. I think they are great.
