This all comes down to what style of home you would like to have - contemporary?  modern?  traditional?  

Dwell and Architectural Record typically focus on modern houses (links provided).  The projects differ, but the materials and products listed on the sites tend to be more helpful that the articles.

What I usually tell people is to go through magazines and website collecting ideas of what they want their house to be and to include.  When you have all of these images or ideas, prioritize them in order of what is absolutely necessary (storage?  views?  materials?) and what isn't.  

If all else fails, you may want to talk to a local architect who will help you with programming, design, permits, and building.
