  1. I had no apprenticeship. I started working in a repair shop.

Honestly, join your local plumbing union, go through the 5 year apprenticeship, and become a real plumber.

After 20 plus years in plumbing, I joined the union. It was the best seven years of my career. Hard work, but good work. I had a lot of windshield time chasing prevailing wage jobs around the state, but it was worth it.

You'll never learn all about plumbing, but the best route is an apprenticeship program.

Package for union plumber here in New Mexico is now 31 dollars an hour. That includes what you get on the paycheck, your retirement which is pretty good, and your insurance.

  2. Time is money & your time is valuable...so why not call a professional? These pros are trained, licensed, and certified. Having them do the work should make you rest easy at night. There's something to be said for "doing it yourself", but save that for the treehouse build or the deck refinishing. So many people think plumbing is easy....there's more to it that plumbing section @ one of the Box Stores would lead you to believe. There's so many codes, rules, & regulations...Good rule of thumb: when in doubt, call a plumber out!

  3. buy yourself a plumber code book from the Home Depot and read up on it....that's a good start

  4. You won't find a site to do this. Plumbing needs to be learned "hands on". I served a five year apprenticeship and even though I can work with almost any type piping (I am also a State certified welder) there are new products coming out everyday. Codes also change and websites don't always have the changes in time. Getting a license without working at a Plumbing shop is also difficult.

  5. I have to agree with RangeDog. No offense to online sites, or you, but one hardly gets mentored, hands on, evolving experience trying to learn any trade online.

Certainly a valid cause, going into trades work. There isn't much doubt that THINGS will always need FIXING at the very least, even as the construction industry crawls along.

Beyond that I often see many negative comments in answers regarding Trades people. I take it in stride, and then answer the calls from many DIY's who say, "HELP!" Hence the name DIY Doc.

As trades people we have usually invested many years and dollars into knowing what we know. We do not make as much money as brain surgeons, but they call us to fix a pipe, paint their homes, install their windows, etc.

    Just my two "sense"

  6. Hands on apprenticeship is required to become a licensed plumber.
