  1. I like PaintShop Pro and Corel (Ulead) PhotoImpact. PaintShop Pro is the main competition for Photo Shop and both use the same plug in types as Adobe.

  2. Adobe Photoshop. I full license is going to cost.

  3. One of my favourites Photoshop CS3. However, it's very expensive and overkill for just basic editing. That's why Adobe Elements makes a very good alternative editor.

Also, Corel Paintshop Pro Photo X2 is another very good editor (and it only costs U.S. $80).

  4. Definitely Adobe Photoshop CS3. Check out the specks here..

It's going to cost around $650 for the basic, and nearly $1000 for the extended. However, if you are fairly good with computers, you might be able to find a much cheaper version on the internet. :) I've toyed with CS3 before, and it is amazing. Anything you can imagine and more, it does.

  5. The best software to process digital photographs would totally depend on how much you know about the subject and what you would like to do.

I myself use Arcsoft-Photoimpressions, It does everything I need to do w/o any hassel

  6. Depends on your skill level and how much time you're willing to invest in learning. All the other answers are good. Photoshop will take time to learn how to use effectively.  Taking a class is also an excellent way to learn if you don't have much experience with image manipulation.

If you're only looking to do simple editing tasks (resizing, contrast, ...), you can get by with free image editors like:

    Irfanview

    XnView

    The Gimp

The Gimp is actually a full featured image editor. It can do most of what Photoshop can do. The user interface sucks, but hey, it's free. It's also slower than Photoshop.

  7. If you work with a lot of photos at once, Adobe Lightroom is quite usable. Adobe Photoshop is for fine editing, removing a pimple, that sort of thing. But with Lightroom, you can correct white-balance of all the photos, or as many as you want, at once.

  8. There are quite a few and some have already been mentioned,  but Adobe Photoshop CS3 is one of the more expensive ones.   How about getting your feet wet with Adobe Elements before going to the expense of CS3?  I think the shelf price is around $100.00 and sometimes there is a promotion going on to give a rebate.   If you only want to process the digital pictures (size, crop, color correct, and file)and not really interested in manipulating them...  you really don't need Photoshop CS 3 anyway.
