I've never been there (moving in Dec), so it would also be useful to know which suburbs should be avoided.

  1. Stay away from Palmerston, is a lower socio-economic area, Howard Springs is good for that bit of space( and if you don't mind a 1/2 hour drive into town.0 Fannie Bay, Cullen Bay are pretty nice. Expensive though. Pretty much anywhere near the CBD from what I remember( been a couple of years). Why December? worst time to go there. I moved up there in November and was greeted with humidity, was pretty uncomfortable and I moved from Brisbane. So unless you are used to humidity and no rain, you are in for a shock. Not to worry though, wet season will be due soon after, then you will be getting wet. Good luck either way, its still a great place to live if you want a layed back lifestyle.

  2. Nightcliffe is really nice Oh I love Darwin but I guess you know you are going at the start of the wet season Get through that and from April it will be perfect. Darwin changes in the dry season. much more activities markets etc going on. I'm not in Darwin just now and it's very nice around the boat harbour area but can't think of the name of the area. You will get to know the areas to avoid but really you may  feel a bit intimidated by the aboriginal groups but they stick together and some of them are very nice and any problems are usually within themselves.  The law is very tough there and criminal activity comes down on them hard. I always feel good in Darwin . You will love the nightcliff area

  3. rapid creek ,nightcliffe, leanyer, cullen bay, f***y bay, moil ,are reasonable places to live. it depends on how far you want to travel. make sure where ever you live, that  it has air conditioning . you'll need it if you're going to survive the build up and the wet season
