  1. I never really liked those rentals. They seem to do a good job putting the water & cleaner down but don't have enough suction to extract the water.

I use a portable extraction machine with dual vacs.

Depending on how big of an area you want to get done it'll probably cost you to call a pro about $50 up to $150 for the whole house.

With the economy being the way it is, people are more willing to negotiate.

  2. steam because that's how a carpet cleaner works....

  3. I prefer a hot water extraction machine, aka "steam cleaner".  Make sure you get the carpet as dry as possible, though -- don't give into the temptation to soak a bad spot.  If you have to, come back to a dirty area several times several days apart.

  4. get the rental carpet shampoo machine from ur local store that has them and instead of buying the carpet cleaner that comes with it. try using simple green. its a stain remover for pretty much anything and everything and it will have ur carpet looking like new! simple green works great for spot cleaning too!

  5. While there are many types of carpet cleaning out there, almost all carpet cleaners use one of two methods.  Hot water extraction, also known as steam cleaning (e.g. Stanley Steemer) or dry cleaning which is sometimes called chemical cleaning (e.g. Chem Dry).

The largest benefit of dry cleaning is that it's more convenient because it dries faster (1 -2 hours).  Steam cleaning takes longer to dry (7 - 8 hours when done properly), but tends to be a more thorough cleaning.

Most carpet manufacturers recommend that you have your carpet steam cleaned.  On Shaw's website (one of the largest carpet manufacturers) at :

    http://www.shawfloors.com/cms/Articles.a...

They say, "Research indicates that the hot water extraction system provides the best capability for cleaning. This system is commonly referred to as 'steam cleaning.'  Shaw warranties require that the homeowner be able to show proof of periodic cleaning by hot water extraction."

I think if carpet manufacturers agree that steam cleaning is the way to go, it's probably a safe bet that it's the best way to clean your carpet.
