  1. MiniDV is best standard definition and high definition video quality and and easiest to import and edit - and assumes your computer has a firewire port or you are willing to install one.

    Hard drive and flash memory based camcorder are best if you don't mind slightly reduced video quality, the extra step for archiving video and your computer only has USB and you are either unwilling or unable to put a firewire port on your computer.

    DVD based camcorders should be recalled and everyone who bought one should get their money back. If you NEVER ever want to edit video or you don't mind short recording times and very poor quality for editing, then go for it.

    No, an external USB connected device with no intelligence cannot be used as a video storage device. The only external drives - of which I am aware - which can do what you want are the firewire connected drives made by FireStore which generally attach to miniDV tape based camcorders and store DV and HDV format video like miniDV tape does (not highly compressed MPEG2 or AVCHD like most consumer internal hard drive and flash memory camcorders do).
