I have already been through a lot of university sites to judge if that particular university has any research programs which suit my interests, but my findings have not been of much relevance, could someone suggest a better way of going about it? Also, I have a GRE score of 1490 (quant-800 and verbal-690) so on what basis should i be shortlisting my application grad schools?Just rank or something else?

  1. "on what basis should i be shortlisting my application grad schools?Just rank or something else?"

I think you know that you can't base your decision on one thing alone. If i were you I would look at the following

    - reputation and rank. However when you look at the ranks, remember that a univ ranked highly for finance may not be the best for computer science, and vice-versa. Look for your course within the university ranks.

    - what's the ratio of international students in the university? It always helps to know if the university is open to accepting international students

    - Fees- of course, you must get value for your money , so fees will be a consideration

    - Chances of scholarship and financial aid (look at the current number of scholarships/ TA)

    - current profile of the students and where are the ex students working? for the current students, what were the internships like?

    - last but not the least, weather, place and cost of living. i mean in a university you are fairly insulated from the cost of living part but still its worth considering.

  2. Lookout for university rankings. You may have to google to find it!

  3. 1490 is wonderful score.

Spend time while selecting graduate school.

    1) What you want to study

    2) Ranking is always deceiving

    3) Research of your interest

    4) Availability of funding
