  1. In my college days, when I read a text, I read it silently, but highlighted the parts that were important. If it was more important, in addition to highlighting, I put a check mark in the margin; if the text was most important, I put two check marks in the margin.

I read everything before class, and noted down questions to ask in class.

In reviewing for a test, the first time I reviewed I read everything that I'd highlighted. The second time I reviewed, I read just what I'd hightlghted plus one check mark, which means I read considerably less than the first time around. The third time I reviewed, I read only what I'd given two check marks to -- which would be a lot less than what I'd read the second time around.

Since the mind best remembers what has been read most recently, the third review would be the day before the test.

The method I described worked well for me. I graduated w/ a bachelor's w/ honors (U. of Fla.) and MBAs from U. of Chicago and Michigan State U.
