  1. depends, I've heard that in Aust. Hamsters are illegal, but I'd have to say definately guinea pigs, I own 25 and they're the best, I only spend 20 bucks a fortnight on food

  3. Guinea pigs are a lot harder to take care of than hamsters, because they need attention, but they are way more friendly than hamsters. They like being held and pet. Hamsters do not. If you're really thinking about getting guinea pigs, than I have some websites you might find helpful.

  4. I highly suggest a gueinea pig .Hamsters tend get mean and bite they also escape easily .Gueinea pigs on the other hand love peolpe and are very cute and friendly I highly suggest gueinea pigs unless you want to be putting a band aid on a bleeding hamster bite every day

  5. don't get a hamster.

  6. hamster- pro - cute, no smell con- nocturnal, fragile, shy, doesnt like rough handling

  8. Hamsters definately. I just got two panda bear hamsters. Nibbles& Fluffernutton. They are nice, holdable, cute, unexpensive, easy to care for. I think they are a great learning and responsibility. Trust me they will love them!

  9. Since they are pretty young, if you get a guinea pig you will probably be taking care of it. Guinea pigs take a lot of work and have very special diet requirements.

Hamsters bite, and are nocturnal, so your kids won't be too happy when their hamster is sleeping all day.

  10. It depends on many factors.  If you go to a "pet shop" to buy an animal it probably didn't get raised by a quality breeder.  Did you know what percentage of pet shop animals die before they reach the point of going for sale?  Too many.  If you can try to get a pet from a good breeder then it will mean that the animals should be friendly and less likely to bite because they have been handled since they were tiny.  Just like any other animal it is best to get pets that are socialized.  Hamsters are small and quick so they can get away easier, Guinea Pigs are larger and if they are neutered males they make great pets.  The larger they are the more they potty and the larger the enviroment needed.  If you aren't totally afraid of the tail check out rats.  They actually make AWESOME pets, are intelligent and many do great with being handled.  I worked as a manager in charge of small pets for several years and found that many rats are the best for younger children that want to hold their pets.  Think of the tail as an anchor.  If the kid accidently lets go the rat normally won't fall to the ground they will hold on and balance themselves.  Don't think of it as not needing to supervise but it lessens the chance of the animal getting hurt.  PS make sure you look up what diseases small animals get that are zoonotic so you aren't surprised.  Sorry for the negativity but I like people to be aware of things before they get too deep.
