Various individual species are also flightless even though they belong to groups of birds that can fly; the Takahe is one example, it is a moorhen but it cannot fly.

Fowl such as turkeys and chickens actually CAN fly, just very poorly; just enough to get up into trees/building rafters where they are safe from ground-based predators. Pheasants, on the other hand, are quite good fliers, as anyone who has ever stumbled upon one will tell you.
