  1. There isn't one correct way.

<<why do they call america the west & asia the east?>>

From the European perspective, America is to the west and Asia to the east.  Guess who started referring to those places as west and east?

  2. Each country has a version of the world maps that shows their continent as being central to their view.

The version for North/South America show our continents as central, the African version shows Africa as being central.

The world is round - thus no actual "left" or "right" continents exist except in our own minds.

  3. Geoff you're a f*g.

  4. i think your right but to be sure try google earth

  5. It depends on your perspective...

Growing up in the States, I usually saw maps with the Americas in the middle.  However, these maps cut Asia in half, which my non-American friends always tell me is ridiculous.

The most common world map has the Americas on the left and Asia on the right and the split happens between eastern Russia and Alaska so no continents are cut in half.

I have never seen a standard world map which has Asia on the left, the Americas on the right, and cuts through the Atlantic. I assume this is because if you cut between Africa and South America, Greenland is cut in half.  However, if you wanted to map Pacific shipping routes, for example, you would certainly use that map layout.

The term "West" actually refers to Europe and the Americas. The Europeans created the term "East" to refer to people living east of them (including Middle East and Far East).  They then began using the contrasting term (i.e. "West") to refer to themselves and their spheres of influence (including the Americas).

  6. Generally North is "UP"

There are Maps that have America on the right

Whether we like it or not, East and West are still based on a certain "Europecentrity", because Europe was the most influential power (just think about the British Empire)
