  2. The fastest regular passenger train in operation at the moment is the Shanghai Maglev train in China, which runs from Shanghai Pudong International Airport to Longyang Road station on the Shanghai subway line 2.

    The total track length is about 30 kilometres, with an additional, separate track leading to a maintenance facility. The train takes 7 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the journey, and its top operational speed is 431 kilometers (267 miles) per hour.

    It runs daily from 7am to 9pm in intervals of 15 minutes.

  4. The answers above are correct, but these are not "regular" passenger trains, but rather specialized for high speed, as in the case of the Bullet Trains, TGV of France and others.  The Mag-lev is in a class all its own and barely qualifies as a "train" at all, in the conventional sense.

    AMTRAK's "regular" passenger trains operating in the Capitol Corridor run at 125 MPH, day in and day out.

    In the US, passenger train speeds are limited to 79 MPH, unless the signaling system meets certain criteria, and then only when the locomotives are equipped with "cab signals", which is a display inside the cab that shows the signals that the train is operating under.  This is absolutely necessary when operating in inclement weather, such as fog, haze or heavy rain or snow.

I was on a train in Germany that had a digital readout in front of the car that went up to 200 kmh (about 120 mph).   When it reached 200 the numbers stopped going up, but we kept on going faster since we were a couple minutes behind schedule.   Everything within a couple hundred yards of the train was just a blur.
