  1. Since your question is non-specific, I presume that trains that can reach the speed of light would be the fastest train. At present prototypes of meglev trains reaching a speed of around 500 - 600 km/hr is the fastest.

  2. go to the world almanac or wikepidia

most of the records were set on steam trains.

but in USA GG1 electric did some exceptional speeds

    ex rail workers

    MC.

  3. Magnetic levitation transport, or maglev, is a form of transportation that suspends, guides and propels vehicles (especially trains) via electromagnetic force. This method can be faster than wheeled mass transit systems, potentially reaching velocities comparable to turboprop and jet aircraft (500km/h). The maximum recorded speed of a maglev train is 581km/h, achieved in Japan in 2003.

The first commercial Maglev was opened in 1984 in Birmingham, England, covering some 600 meters between its airport and railhub, but was eventually closed in 1995 due to technical problems. The only currently operating high-speed maglev line of note is the IOS (initial operating segment) demonstration line of Shanghai, China that transports people 30km (18.6 miles) to the airport in just 7 minutes 20 seconds, achieving a top velocity of 431 km/h or 268 mph, averaging 250 km/h or 150 mph. Other maglev projects worldwide are being studied for feasibility. However, scientific, economic and political barriers and limitations have hindered the widespread adoption of the technology.

All operational implementations of maglev technology have had minimal overlap with wheeled train technology and have not been compatible with conventional rail tracks. Because they cannot share existing infrastructure, maglevs must be designed as complete transportation systems. The term "maglev" refers not only to the vehicles, but to the railway system as well, specifically designed for magnetic levitation and propulsion.

  4. I think the fastest train is the bullet train between Tokyo and Osaka in Japan.

  5. It's a very close contest between maglev trains and regular railroads.  Generally everytime a maglev breaks a speed record, the French take it back with their regular-railroad TGV.  This year, a maglev went 361 mph and the French response fell 4 mph short.

However, the French are trying to sell their TGV technology worldwide, and in a gutsy move, they invited dozens of their most important customers to ride the speed run!

In the real world, the French TGV wins, with regular passenger service at 200mph.  The Japanese Shinkansen is a close second.  These are regular railroad, steel wheels on steel rails on ties on ballast, but highly optimized for speed.

Behind France and Japan are Germany and Spain.  Spain uses French TGV equipment and holds the world speed record for unmodified trains.  They just took a regular trainset that people ride everyday, and took it to 251 mph.

Maglev track is embedded with magnets through out its length, and that makes the cost insane, without adding any extra speed.  Worse, maglev track is incompatible with regular railroad track so special new routes would have to be built into city centers over very expensive real estate.  Maglev just doesn't make sense financially.

  6. shatabdi in india

  7. The fastest train in operation is the German Transrapid in Shanghai, China, but the fastest overall train is the still-in-development Japan Rail JR-MLX01.

  8. Right now it's the Tokyo to Osaka train. The Swiss will be completing a tunnel through the Alps which will accommodate a train that will be faster and the Germans have a mag-lev train still in development that will exceed anything on the rails today or in the near future.

  9. TGV of France
