  1. Penicillin was the first antibiotic to be discovered. It was discovered in the year 1928 by Alexander Fleming in St. Mary's Hospital, London. He was examining a culture of Staphylococcus aureus, when he noticed that it had become contaminated by a species of Penicillium. Although, the species of the mold was unknown to Fleming, at the time, he did observe that it was inhibiting the bacterial growth. Before Fleming, there were a series of observations that influenced his research, and allowed him to come to the correct conclusion when a chance contamination in his bacterial culture was observed. This same opportunity came to others as well, but their only response to the contamination was that it had ruined their experiment and they had discarded the cultures and thought nothing more of it.

  2. look up penicillin.

  3. The Sulfa Drugs, I don't Know By Who, or Where.  If I Remember Correctly, they all Inhibit Bacterial Flolate Anabolism, and are Bacteriostatic.

  4. The first identified antibiotic was the sulfonamide drug, Prontosil, patented in 1932 by the I. G. Farbenindustrie.  It was initially used to treat a streptococcal infection in a 10-month-old infant in a study reported in 1933.  Domagk is credited with the first studies showing anti-bacterial activity of Prontosil and won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1938 for this discovery.

  5. Its Pencilin, I believe on Rat..... Not sure on this.

  6. The first antibiotic was prontosil.  This is converted to the first class of useful antibiotics by metabolism called sulfonamides (specificly sulfanilamide).  I don't remember who discovered that the synthetic dye prontosil had antibiotic properties (after metabolism, prontosil itself has no in vitro antibiotic properties).  It was in the 20's that penicillin was discovered.

  7. Fleming is generally credited with discovering the antibiotic properties of penicillin, although reports of inhibition of bacterial growth by molds on agar plates had been noted by others somewhat earlier. But penicillin did not become commercially available until the early 1940s.

Antibiotic properties of certain sulfonamides were noted around 1932, and Prontosil came out around 1935. It was discovered by scientists at Bayer.
