The Ford Escape Hybrid gets the best mpg of any suv.  The Saturn Vue Hybrid is 2nd.  Other crossovers/suv's are the Ford Edge, GMC Acadia.

Currently the best fuel economy for an SUV is the 2WD hybrid versions of the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner/Mazda Tribute, at 34mpg city/30mpg highway (better than some cars!).

Then there's the Toyota Highlander Hybrid/Lexus RX400h, with 27mpg city/25mpg highway.  The Toyota Highlander Hybrid starts at $34,200.

So, maybe you should look for a used one if price is an issue.

After the hybrid options above, is the Jeep Compass/Patriot 2wd at 23mpg city/28mpg highway.  MSRP on these start around $17,000, so maybe that is where you should start looking.
