I recommend the following but the choice is yours.

Firstly - it depends what OS you computr uses.

For XP or Vista I always download:

ZoneAlarm (Firewall)

AVG Free (Anti-Virus)

AdAware (Anti-spyware)

CCleaner (cleans up all the bits and pieces that get left behind after daily use)

Defraggler (HDD defragmenting tool far superior to the built in facility)

These are all free to use in a non-commercial environment, and I have set up loads of PCs running this setup for over 3 years in home environments and never a problem!

Also make sure you keep your OS up to date with automatic updates.
